Since 2001, May 22 has been observed as the International Day for Biological Diversity, with the main goal of raising awareness about the extinction of many plant and animal species worldwide, as well as ways to preserve and restore them. This annual event, established by the UN General Assembly, serves as a call for global cooperation in addressing urgent environmental issues.
On May 22, 2024, Azerbaijan Fish Farm MMC, a subsidiary of LU-MUN Holding, organized a significant event at the Kura Production and Experimental Sturgeon Breeding Plant in the Neftchala district to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity. During this event, 50,000 sturgeon fingerlings were released into the Caspian Sea. This important contribution by the company aims to preserve the biodiversity of the endemic species of the Caspian. Azerbaijan Fish Farm has committed to the restoration and conservation of sturgeon populations, which are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of the Caspian Sea.
More than 100 distinguished guests attended the event, including representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture experts, and high-ranking officials. Foreign guests and ambassadors from Latvia, Switzerland and Germany also attended, noting the importance of such corporate environmental responsibility programs.
It is worth recalling that in line with global commitments to combat climate change, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, declared 2024 the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World," reaffirming the country's dedication to environmental protection. During their speeches, Rufat Tabasaranskiy, Chairman of the Management Board of LU-MUN Holding, and Mammad Nazaraliyev, Chief Executive Officer of Azerbaijan Fish Farm, emphasized their commitment to environmental sustainability. They highlighted the upcoming COP 29 conference, underscoring the prioritization of environmental issues within their corporate strategies. This focus reflects their dedication to integrating eco-friendly practices and addressing global environmental challenges in alignment with the conference's objectives.
The company's initiative is a prime example of an active approach to biodiversity conservation, setting a precedent for responsible environmental stewardship in the region. This significant event, dedicated to the International Day for Biological Diversity, underscored both the importance of collective actions for restoring sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan Fish Farm's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
The main partner of the event was Azerbaijan Poultry Company, which produces chicken products under the Marcan brand. Other partners included FAO and Azpol.
